Preschool Corner ~ Our Alphabet Box

After I found the idea for an Alphabet Box on Counting Coconuts I went right out and purchased a container from Walmart.  As soon as I got home I started filling it with miniature objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet.

  Alphabet Box

Here is what I have collected for the letter a ~ apple, ant, alligator, and ax.

  Alphabet Box

I finished filling the box and set it out in our school room.  My original plan was to introduce a letter each week ~ guess I shouldn’t have left the box where the kids could get it.  They have been exploring and playing with the box all week.   Emily has been playing school with Aiden, having him trace our sandpaper letters with his finger and say the sound each letter makes.  He loves to play with sissy so I have just let her take the lead and be teacher during some of our school time.

Same thing happens to me as the kids realize things are there. I plan to introduce it slowly and they've already got the whole thing out and in pieces.

I LOVE alphabet boxes! Matching letters and miniature objects was one of my son’s very favorite activities as a toddler. You did a beautiful job with your alphabet box!

I love this idea. Where are you finding all of the miniature stuff? I've actually started making ABC tubes or sound tubes. I purchased the tubes from Steve Spangler Science and am filling each one with something that begins with a particular sound. For instance - I have a bug in one (yeah, it's gross) and rice in another. The lids screw on and off, which I love so that I can change the items out. I'm not finished with the set yet.

Cindy, would you please let me know if the toys stay in the boxes? I think mine would have them all over the place ~ but then again, I may be wrong! Looks like too much fun!
