Preschool Corner ~ The Mixed-Up Chameleon

Our theme this week was Chameleons and the Letter C.

Book of the Week and Craft:

We read The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle.

The Mixed-Up Chameleon

We all loved this book!  It is about a chameleon, whose life is not very exciting until he visits the zoo and discovers that he can change his shape and size.  When he sees all of the beautiful animals in the zoo, he wants to be like all of them and ends up looking quite crazy.

For our craft I gave Aiden clipart pictures of all the things the chameleon meet at the zoo. I helped him cut them and he glued them to his chameleon.  Crazy looking isn’t he!

Then Aiden colored and added glitter to a picture of a chameleon.  Isn’t he beautiful ~ just as God intended him to be!

We talked about how God has a plan for us and he already knows what we are suppose to be.  He doesn’t want us to be like everyone else ~ we are perfect just the way God made us!

For snack we had mixed-up frozen yogurt.  We used two flavors of yogurt and swirled them together.

Letter of the Week:

We made a C is for Chameleon.

Aiden searched for the letter C in a Hidden Letter picture.

To work on letter recognition I hid flies under sticky notes with letters on them.  He said the letter and lifted it to see if there was a fly hiding underneath.  If he found a fly I gave him a chocolate chip (fly) to eat.

Lapbook:

I put together a lapbook to go with the book The Mixed-Up Chameleon.  We worked on it a little each day.

He arranged Size Sort Chameleons on a stick, biggest to smallest, and we worked on ordinal numbers.

He matched colored chameleons to color word cards

and put the What Did The Chameleon See At The Zoo cards in order as we read The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

He needed some help with the Chameleon Puzzle.  But enjoyed putting the last pieces together.

Our Bible verse this week was Psalm 139:14.  We used The Power of Encouragement CD from Seeds Family Worship to help memorize this verse.   I love these CDs!

Aiden practiced counting 0 to 10 by feeding The Hungry Chameleon flies.  We didn’t use the flies from the printout ~ we used flies made out of felt (which we caught during our science lesson).

Science:

We talked about how chameleons use their sticky tongues to catch flies.  To demonstrate this I added Velcro to the end of a party blower so Aiden could catch and “eat” flies made out of felt.

We used a chameleon made out of transparency paper to show how a chameleon uses camouflage.
