Fish Bubble Counting File Folder Game

We are heading to the beach later this month.  The kids are quite excited since this is their first trip to see the ocean.  For the next couple of weeks we will be learning about all the animals that inhabit the ocean.

To try and add in some math fun I made Aiden a Fish Bubble Counting File Folder Game ~ counting 1 to 10.

click the images above to download the game.

He counts the number of bubbles and picks the fish with the correct number.  I added Velcro dots to the fish and the file folder game.  I colored the dots on the file folder blue, with a permanent marker, so he would not mistake them for one of the fish bubbles.

I’ll post more about how we played the game tomorrow in my Preschool Corner post.

Preschool Corner ~ The Mixed-Up Chameleon

Our theme this week was Chameleons and the Letter C.

Book of the Week and Craft:

We read The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle.

The Mixed-Up Chameleon

We all loved this book!  It is about a chameleon, whose life is not very exciting until he visits the zoo and discovers that he can change his shape and size.  When he sees all of the beautiful animals in the zoo, he wants to be like all of them and ends up looking quite crazy.

For our craft I gave Aiden clipart pictures of all the things the chameleon meet at the zoo. I helped him cut them and he glued them to his chameleon.  Crazy looking isn’t he!

IMG_2335

Then Aiden colored and added glitter to a picture of a chameleon.  Isn’t he beautiful ~ just as God intended him to be!

IMG_2347

We talked about how God has a plan for us and he already knows what we are suppose to be.  He doesn’t want us to be like everyone else ~ we are perfect just the way God made us!

For snack we had mixed-up frozen yogurt.  We used two flavors of yogurt and swirled them together.

Letter of the Week:

We made a C is for Chameleon.

IMG_2330

Aiden searched for the letter C in a Hidden Letter picture.

To work on letter recognition I hid flies under sticky notes with letters on them.  He said the letter and lifted it to see if there was a fly hiding underneath.  If he found a fly I gave him a chocolate chip (fly) to eat.

Lapbook:

I put together a lapbook to go with the book The Mixed-Up Chameleon.  We worked on it a little each day.

IMG_2370 IMG_2369 IMG_2371

He arranged Size Sort Chameleons on a stick, biggest to smallest, and we worked on ordinal numbers.

He matched colored chameleons to color word cards

and put the What Did The Chameleon See At The Zoo cards in order as we read The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

He needed some help with the Chameleon Puzzle.  But enjoyed putting the last pieces together.

Our Bible verse this week was Psalm 139:14.  We used The Power of Encouragement CD from Seeds Family Worship to help memorize this verse.   I love these CDs!

Aiden practiced counting 0 to 10 by feeding The Hungry Chameleon flies.  We didn’t use the flies from the printout ~ we used flies made out of felt (which we caught during our science lesson).

Science:

We talked about how chameleons use their sticky tongues to catch flies.  To demonstrate this I added Velcro to the end of a party blower so Aiden could catch and “eat” flies made out of felt.

We used a chameleon made out of transparency paper to show how a chameleon uses camouflage.

We used the following printables:

Chameleon Color Cards

Chameleon Puzzle

Chameleon Size Sort

The Hungry Chameleon ~ Counting 0 - 10

I made a simple counting game for Aiden ~ The Hungry Chameleon.  Pick a number card and put the correct number of flies on his tongue to feed him.

Butterfly Number Matching File Folder Game

This week we are learning about caterpillars and butterflies.   To go along with our theme and help Aiden work on the numbers 0 – 10, I made a Butterfly Number Matching File Folder Game.

image

The download includes butterflies with spots ~ count the number of spots and match the butterfly to the correct flowerimage

and butterflies with spots and numbers ~ match the number on the butterfly to the number on the flower.

Here is how we played:

I hung the butterflies from the ceiling,

IMG_2139

gave Aiden a butterfly net, and let him catch them.  As he pulled them out of the net, he told me the color of the butterfly (all of the butterflies are different colors so we could work on colors too!) and he counted the spots and said the number.

IMG_2144

I had to keep hanging the butterflies up so he could do it again and again!  Later in the week I will help him match the butterflies to the numbers on the flowers.

Vegetable Alphabet Game

We are going to be outside this week getting our garden ready for planting and starting some seeds.  I love teaching around themes so this week Aiden is learning about vegetables and gardening.  To go along with our theme I made a Vegetable Alphabet File Folder Game for him.

image image

If you would like to download the file folder game click on either of the images above.

Aiden is still learning the letters of the alphabet so I didn’t make this a matching game.  I “planted” the vegetables in rows of dirt, made out of construction paper, and Aiden pulled the veggies out  telling me the letter on each vegetable.IMG_1902

Houses ~ Colors, Numbers and Home Address Activity

Aiden is currently learning our home address.  To make thinks fun I printed off some colored houses, one with our address on it, and the others with the numbers 1 – 10.  I taped them to wooden blocks so they would stand up.  I also made some street signs out of crafts sticks.  The base is Crayola Model Magic (have I said how much I love this stuff?).  One of the street signs is for the road we live on and the others are just for fun.

IMG_1848Learning Activities ~  We have been using the houses all week for several different activities.

Colors and Numbers:  I called out a house number, Aiden would find the house and tell me the house color and repeat the number.

IMG_1851

Should I have called 911?:  Both the kids are learning about 911 and when it is appropriate to call.   When they found the correct color/number house they would take turns asking me what the emergency was.  I would give examples such as:

  • My cat is in the tree and I can’t get her down.
  • A rag was left on the stove and caught on fire.
  • The bathtub is overflowing.
  • Someone tried to break into our house.
  • My smoke detector was going off.

We talked over the scenarios and decided whether I should have called 911 or not.

Our House:  We practiced finding our house and road, and repeating our address.

You can download the houses here.  The last house is left blank so you can add your house number and/or address.

Story Cards ~ Easter

Aiden is really becoming quite the story teller lately so I decided to make some Easter Story Cards.

image image

I plan on using these for both kiddos.  Aiden, who is 3, will pick two or three cards and make up a story about whatever he has chosen.

Emily, who is in 1st grade, will pick one or two cards and write a story.   We could also take turns picking a card, creating and adding on to the story until we use all of the cards.
