Preschool Corner ~ How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World

One of my goals this year is to do more family schooling ~ incorporating things both of the kids can do together.  I pulled out some of our Five In a Row books, which go along perfectly with our geography studies!  This week we read How To Make an Apple Pie and See the World.

Art and Sewing:

Aiden stamped apple prints on a piece of fabric.

Sensory:

We all had fun playing with our apple pie play dough.  Smells so good and almost looks good enough to eat.

Snack Time:

To go along with the story we made butter using heavy whipping cream and lots of shaking power!

Then we enjoyed bread and butter! making butter

You can’t read How to Make and Apple Pie and See the World without making apple pies can you?  We made miniature pies.

How can you get the salt out of sea water?

We boiled water and added salt to make our salty sea water.

Then we poured the water in a shallow pan and put in outside in the sun.   We let it sit for most of the day and then poured the remaining water off.  The next morning we were left with just the salt.

Language:

I let Aiden watch Letter Factory while I help Emily with her math and reading.  He has almost all of the letter sounds down.  He can’t tell me what the letter is but he can tell me the sound it makes.

We worked on sorting the miniatures from our alphabet box for the letters “a” and “b”.

We have been using Peterson Directed Handwriting for the past month.  You can see my review here.  We are continuing to work on the strokes required to write each letter.   peterson directed handwriting

We are also working our way through Language Lessons for Little Ones.  I LOVE this book!  The lessons are very short and include picture studies, introduction to the alphabet, poetry and story appreciation.

 Math:

We counted apples, subtracted apples, and played with the apples.

Nature Study:

We have spent a great deal of time outside this week watching the flurry of activity at our butterfly bush ~ more to come about this on Sunday.      nature study
