Preschool Corner ~ Vegetables & Gardening

Our theme this week was vegetables and gardening.

Bible:

Our Bible verse this week was Genesis 1:29.  We talked about God providing everything we need.

 

Alphabet:
Our letter this week was V for vegetable.  I pulled out the sandpaper letters for Aiden.  He would trace the letter then write it in a tray of dirt. 

We used the letter V playdough mat from Homeschool Creations

and worked on letter recognition with our Vegetable Alphabet Game.

He practiced spelling his name with the alphabet vegetables.

Aiden LOVED the Letter V Search from Home Grown Hearts.  He did the worksheet three times. 

Math:
Aiden counted and graphed seeds.

We worked on pattern matching with a file folder game from Homeschool Share.

Colors:
Emily pulled out a color matching game and helped Aiden match the colored crayons to the words.

Other Fun Activities:
A Garden Tool Shadow Matching Game and

 

a vegetable feely bag.  I gathered veggies we had in the fridge and put them in a pillow case.  To make it easier for Aiden to identify the vegetables I printed cards showing what vegetables were in the bag.  He would draw a card and feel for the correct vegetable.

He had fun playing with Mr. Potato Head.

Books and Craft:
We read The Carrot Seed and Growing Vegetable Soup.  After we were finished reading we cut carrots out of cardstock and painted over them with mud.  Messy but fun! 

Science:

We read How a Seed Grows, and took apart a lima bean, that I soaked overnight.  Aiden got a close look with a magnifying glass. 

We worked on putting Sprouting Bean Sequencing Cards in order. 

    

Aiden planted some beans, which we will be observing, and hopefully eating this summer!

   He watered his plants

and helped get our garden ready for planting.

Vegetable Feely Bag

This was a super easy and fun activity that both the kids enjoyed.  I gathered some of the vegetables we had in the fridge.

 

Printed, and cut apart cards showing all of the vegetables we were going to use for our game.

The veggies went into a pillow case.  The kids drew a vegetable card, felt around for the correct vegetable

  

and pulled the veggie out to make sure it matched their card.

The kids took turns describing what the vegetables felt like.  I should have written down their descriptions because they were quite funny (bumpily, broccolish).

 

When we were finished playing I cut the veggies up.  The kids covered their eyes and I feed them a little piece of  vegetable.  They tried to guess what I was feeding them. 

 

Aiden discovered that he likes peppers.  Emily still thinks they are gross!

The Carrot Seed ~ Craft

To go along with our theme of vegetables and gardening we read The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss.

Our craft ~ painting mud over carrots.  Messy but fun!  The idea came from someone in our homeschool co-op.

What You’ll Need:

• Container of dirt (the kids sifted the dirt to remove any clumps of dirt, rocks, etc.)
• Carrots cut out of orange paper
• Carrot tops cut out of green paper
• Grey or light colored paper for background
• Water
• White Glue (2 spoonfuls)
• Spoon 

What The Kids Will Do:

1. Glue carrots to paper 

2. Add water to the dirt, making mud.

3.  Sensory experience ~ Let the kids play in the mud.  Encourage them to describe how the mud feels (icky, wet, cold, squishy).  My kids wanted no part of this.  The one time I wanted them to play in the mud, they said “No way, YUCK”!

4.  Add the glue until the mud is the consistency of paint (ours was a little too thick.)

5.  Using hands or a spoon, cover the carrots with mud.

 

6. Glue tops on carrots. 

  I guess I don’t need to add ~ you might what to do this craft outside!
